The Federal army entered the battle with 104,000 troops, losing 2747.
The Confederate army began with 67,000 troops, losing about 2800
(the exact toll was not known).

The Federal casualties (including William Shore, wounded) were removed
to Chattanooga.

Many of the Confederates killed in action were buried hastily or, unfortunately,
could not be retrieved from the battlefield during the withdrawal.

After the battle the citizens of Resaca collected the Confederate remains.
They gave their labor and the few possessions they had to a fund for
making this piece of land into a proper memorial place for their dead.

The fund was headed by Mary J. Green, of Resaca.

Some 450 Confederate soldiers are buried here.
