The Family of Thomas Winn

1) Thomas Winn was born 12 Aug 1801 in Kentucky or Virginia, died on 12 Oct 1878 in Stark co., Illinois at age 76, and was buried in Toulon Cemetery, Toulon twp., Stark co., Illinois.    He died at the home of his son, Perry Winn.

Thomas's father was born in Ireland and came to America before the Revolutionary War, in which he served, as a musician (played fife) under the name "Mad Anthony Wayne".

Thomas came from Switzerland co., Indiana in 1831, to "Fort Scott", near Peoria.  On 6 Nov 1832, he was one of several area men who signed a letter to the Army, describing problems with the local Indians, and asking for assistance.

In 1834 he relocated to Stark county, near the present site of Wyoming, at the "McClenahan Settlement" in Goshen twp.  His family appeared in the censuses of 1840 and 1850, working as a farmer, and in 1860, working as a constable.  In 1870, he was working as Police Magistrate in Wyoming.

Thomas married Mary A. Johnson, daughter of William Johnson and Unknown, in 1823.   Mary was born on 4 Apr 1798 in Indiana, died on 18 May 1877 at age 79, and was buried in Toulon Cemetery, Toulon twp., Stark co., Illinois.  Mary Winn was baptized and received as a member of the First Baptist Church at Toulon, on 18 Aug 1849.

Children from this marriage were:

2) Madison Winn was born on 7 Nov 1823, died on 2 Feb 1903 at age 79, and was buried in Toulon Cemetery, Toulon twp., Stark co., Illinois.

He attended the first organized school in Stark county.  In 1886, he was chosen to fill a vacancy on the County Central Committee (Stark co.) from West Toulon.   He worked as a school director from 1857 until after 1887.  In February of 1898, he was living near Toulon.

Madison married Mary (--?--).  Mary was born on 1 Mar 1826, died on 7 Dec 1902 at age 76, and was buried in Toulon Cemetery, Toulon twp., Stark co., Illinois.

From the July 14, 1859 Stark County News:
Some time ago Mr. J. Winn of this place, left a new pair of boots on the door step of his residence and went into the house; after a short time he returned for them, but they had disappeared, and neither the boots nor thief could be found.

On Monday a man came before Esquire Brodhead, and made complaint against a certain party in this vicinity, for stealing a pair of boots, whereupon a writ was issued and put into an officer's hands to arrest the  (____) party but at last accounts he was not found.

Children

5) Perry Winn (Thomas) was born on 15 Jul 1830 in Switzerland co., Indiana, died on 31 Jan 1898 in West Jersey twp., Stark co., Illinois at age 67, and was buried in Toulon Cemetery, Toulon twp., Stark co., Illinois.

In 1834, he relocated with his family from near Peoria to Stark county, and appeared in the census of 1840 in the household of his father.  In 1850, he and his wife were living in the household of his father in Stark county, where both farmed.  In 1852, they moved to Snareville (Stark county).  He was a charter member of the Stark County Agricultural Society, formed in October of 1853.  In 1856, he moved to Duncan, where he lived for eight years before moving to Toulon.  They remained in Toulon for a year, then moved to a farm south of Toulon for about 16 years.

He had been appointed Guardian of Presley Colwell, who was his wife's nephew.  Colwell's father, Thomas, was killed in the Civil War in 1863 in Kentucky.  He served on the Executive Committee of the Old Settlers Union in 1883.  In 1886, Perry was selected to serve on the County Central Committee of the Republican county convention, representing East Goshen.  He was also appointed as a delegate to the legislative convention the same year.  In addition, he was one of two vice presidents of the Stark County Agricultural Society.

Perry married Sarah Anne Graves, daughter of John Graves and Joyce Elizabeth Freeman, on 14 Apr 1850 in Stark co., Illinois.  Sarah was born on 18 Nov 1826 in Ross co., Ohio, died on 17 Sep 1910 in Stark co., Illinois at age 83, and was buried in Toulon Cemetery, Toulon twp., Stark co., Illinois.

Sarah Graves appeared in the censuses of 1830 and 1840 in Jefferson twp., Ross co., Ohio, in the household of her father, John Graves, and in the censuses of 1850-1900 in Stark county, Illinois.

Children from this marriage were:

9) Miles Winn was born on 8 Mar 1851 in Stark co., Illinois, died on 15 Jun 1873 in Stark co., Illinois at age 22, and was buried in Sheets Cemetery, Essex twp., Stark co., Illinois.

He appeared on the 1860 and 1870 censues in the household of his parents, in Stark county.  In 1870, he was working as a farm hand.

+ 10) Noah Webster Winn was born in Sep 1852 in Illinois, died in 1935 in Elmira twp., Stark co., Illinois at age 83, and was buried in Toulon Cemetery, Toulon twp., Stark co., Illinois.

11) Milton Winn

12) Austin Winn

There is some confusion regarding Milton and Austin; there is a headstone for each at Sheets cemetery in Stark county.  Milton's lists the death date with exact age.   Hi s date of birth calculates to the same date of birth as is listed on Austin's headstone.  The cemetery book produced by the Stark County Genealogical Society lists the same birth and death dates for each.  Perhaps they are twins, but it seems unlikely that they would die on the same day.  Milton is listed on 1860 census with his parents, so there is clearly an error somewhere.  Austin is listed as being 3 years old in the 1860 census.

+ 13) Joyce E. Winn was born in Jan 1865 in Illinois, died in 1937 in Stark co., Illinois at age 72, and was buried in Toulon Cemetery, Toulon twp., Stark co., Illinois.

6.  William Winn (Thomas) was born about 1834 in Illinois.  He appeared on the 1840 and 1850 censuses in Stark co., Illinois, in the household of his parents.  In 1860 he worked as a farmer in Stark co., and in 1870 he was working as a laborer.

William married Nancy Sheffer on 30 Dec 1855 in Stark co., Illinois.  Nancy was born about 1837 in Canada.  Records of the First Baptist Church in Toulon show a Nancy Winn was baptized on 13 Apr 1856, and was granted a letter of recommendation and dismission by letter on 2 Feb 1862.

One child from this marriage was:

14). Viola Winn was born about 1856 in <Stark co.>, Illinois.

8.  Marshall Winn (Thomas) was born on 18 Apr 1842 in Toulon twp., Stark co., Illinois, died on 17 Mar 1904 at age 61, and was buried in Wyoming Cemetery, Essex twp., Stark co., Illinois.

He appeared in the censuses of 1850 and 1860 in Stark county, in the household of his parents.  In August of 1862, he enlisted in Co. H., 1st NY Marine Artillery, and was sent to Staten Island, New York.  Most of his service was aboard the gunboat "Vidette."  He was temporarily sent to the 17th MA Infantry, where he fought in North Carolina, in the battles of Southwest Creek, Kingstone, Whitehall, Dudley Station and Goldsboror.  In February of 1863, he took part in the attack against Charleston, South Carolina, afterward returning to Hilton Head.  He was mustered out in April of 1863.  In March of 1864, he re-enlisted, serving in Battery A., 2nd Illinois Artillery in New Orleans.  He was honorably discharged in July of 1865.  In December of 1866, he moved from Toulon to Wyoming, where he started a harness and saddle business.  The censuses of 1870 and 1880 show him living in Wyoming, working as a harness maker.  In 1898, he was still living in Wyoming.

Like others in his family, he was involved in his community.  In 1886, he was appointed as a delegate to the Republican convention from East Toulon.  He was a member of DeWolf Post No. 871, Wyoming G.A.R., and also acted as adjutant.  In 1886, he served as commander of that organization.  He was also an officer in the I. O. G. T. Lodge of Wyoming.  He was a member of the Baptist Society, a staunch Republican, and worked hard for the issue of temperance.  He enjoyed painting and drawing.

Marshall married Cedelia Louisa Shore, daughter of John Shore and Mary A. Brandenburg, in Dec 1869 in Lafayette, Stark co., Illinois.   Cedelia was born in 1844 in Illinois, died in 1931 at age 87, and was buried in Wyoming Cemetery, Essex twp., Stark co., Illinois.  She joined the Baptist Church of Christ in Wyoming, in 1869, and also served as a clerk in the church.  Her nephew, Jesse P. Shore, 3 years old, was living with them in 1880.

A child from this marriage was:
